In light of yesterday’s US supreme court ruling and overturn of Roe v. Wade:
I believe the Lord is calling us to compassion for those who face this horrible decision to end the life of the unborn. I would not say that a person in this predicament does not love children.
I am pro-life. Always have been, even when I became pregnant as a young Christian at the age of 21 with my firstborn while in college and others wanted me to have an abortion.
I faced ridicule in my decision, faced insults and accusations that I had ruined my life, would not amount to anything and would always live in the ghetto. To that insult, I said to my accuser, do you mean ghetto or slum? See, cause I don’t mind living in the ghetto which actually means a part of the city occupied by a minority group.
No, abortion was not the answer for me because I knew that my son was not an accident just because I was unmarried. No, he is still created in God’s image and likeness.
My child was never “unwanted” though my pregnancy was unexpected. There is a huge difference between these two words.
Sidebar: I am always in awe of my Abba Father who has never labelled or called any of us UNWANTED. God never labelled us as disabled / handicapped, or ugly or dyslexic or whatever….
Instead, He is forever singing songs over you and me, “You are accepted in the Beloved”, “You are my child, I have called you by MY NAME. You are mine.”
Isaiah 43:1-3 (King James Version) puts it this way:
But now thus saith the Lord that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine.
2 When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.
3 For I am the Lord thy God, the Holy One of Israel, thy Saviour: I gave Egypt for thy ransom, Ethiopia and Seba for thee.
I believe we need to change the narrative, change the wording from unwanted to unexpected pregnancy which is less harsh and uncondemning. I believe we must walk in the shoes of others facing the decision to abort an unexpected pregnancy, both male and female. The father must also be involved in this decision because he is often left out of the equation, in the name of “my body, my right”.
It is not just your body, your right; it is also the child’s rights and BOTH of you belong to the Creator of the Universe, BOTH of you are wonderfully made by the awesome Hand of a Magnificent Father.
Both the lives of the mother and the unborn must be protected, the unborn and the woman who finds herself in this predicament. Will the resources be provided to her to take care of her during the pregnancy? After the child is born, other options must be made available to her. Are people aware of the heartaches that the woman and man go through, the depression, the guilt? Remembering every year, the “anniversary” of the death of their child?
Let us love, truly love without dissimulation, meaning without pretension. Our love for others must not be judgmental or hypocritical. Romans 12:9-10 puts it this way:
9 Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.
10 Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another.
Former President Ronald Reagan once said, “I have noticed that everyone who is for abortion has already been born.”
He was right. I agree.
Last October, I wrote a piece titled, To the Unborn Clearly Seen by the Invisible Father. My prayer is that this gives people hope in the midst of so much calamity.

Finally, I firmly believe that whether a pregnancy is expected or unexpected, each child that is conceived is an answer to some problem in the world. So many millions of babies have been violently ripped from their mothers’ wombs globally. But it’s time to make a change.
That tiny speck that is invisible to the human eye has the cure to hunger and famine, has the answer to sustainability, has the answer to gun control, has the answer to global warming, he or she has a new invention to make this world a better place.
Time to heal our world, truly. Less arguing over rights and more of doing that which is the right thing to do.
