The Heart of Giving

May 18, 2022

Have you ever given to a person or a cause but wished you had more to give?

You may have even felt that what you gave (whether it is of your time, talent or your treasure) was not good enough because you were ridiculed or criticized because what you gave was miniscule or microscopic compared to others who gave hundreds or thoursands of dollars.

I recently had the opportunity to give to an organization. As I wrote out the money order, I wished that I could give more and felt bad that my gift was not big enough. Imagine my shock when days later I received a text thanking me for my generosity which was appreciated.

That brought me to tears because what I considered to be small was received with thanks and gratitude. It dawned on me that when I give, it is more about the heart and spirit of my giving. To the recipient, it was generous!

Wow! That blew me away. To the recipient, the gift was substantial, large, lavish, liberal, plentiful.

It’s interesting that we often applaud those who give out of their abundance and downplay those who give less. So insightful that Jesus shed light on this very thing. He was in the temple in Luke 21:1-4:

21 And he looked up, and saw the rich men casting their gifts into the treasury. And he saw also a certain poor widow casting in thither two mites. And he said, Of a truth I say unto you, that this poor widow hath cast in more than they all: For all these have of their abundance cast in unto the offerings of God: but she of her penury hath cast in all the living that she had.

Keep on giving. You may feel it is insignificant but do it anyway. Give intentionally, no matter the amount. The ripple effects will reap exponential dividends, impacting lives for generations to come.
