(Dedicated to my co-worker Denis Knaack – Tuesday, 7/28/1992 @ 6:20 am)
Something caught my eye at work this morning That really touched my heart.
Seeing what I saw was really not expected And it gave me quite a start.
There on the table was a roll of tissue Wrapped in ribbons of purple, pink and blue.
Attached was a note with a very brief message And I knew in that instant it was put there by you.
The note simply stated: “just a little something To remember me by when I am gone.”
And then when I saw you, I asked how you were feeling Knowing only a little of the struggle you’d begun.
You tried to hide your feelings but your face told the story Of fear and uncertainty and life’s ambiguity.
As you tore up the note and threw away the pieces I wished in some way I could set your mind at ease.
These past months I have watched you and I’ve listened. So while there’s still time, as a friend, I’d like to mention:
In your every waking hour, make each second count. Each kind thought, word, and deed: let these be your legacy.
